Info
Heidi Specker, born in 1962, lives in Berlin. She works in series that thematically expand from architecture to objects and portraiture. The series “SPECKERGRUPPEN" (1995) and “IM GARTEN" (2004) juxtapose architecture and nature. The following photographs are connected to places associated with individuals: Mies van der Rohe in “LANDHAUS LEMKE" (2008) and Giorgio de Chirico or Carlo Mollino in “TERMINI" (2010). “In Front Of" (2016) explores portraiture using her personal surroundings as an example. With “DAMME" (2020), Specker addresses her hometown. Her interest in working with film intensifies with this project and “Cornfeld" (2022), as does her work in participatory projects with small and large groups. In homage to the photographer Aenne Biermann, in addition to photographs, the photo films “Amnesia Gera”, 2024 and “WIEN VIENNA”, 2025 were created.
Photography offers Specker the opportunity to dissolve the hierarchies between gesture, matter, material, surface, and body, and to subject them all to comparison. Her work reveals the approach she takes with and through her images, the manner in which she reflects on the visible, and her corresponding attempts to develop a specific aesthetic strategy. In doing so, she sometimes unleashes a poetics of the visible to question a kind of disharmony between image and object, as well as the power of photographic images, whose effect we all share.
